Custom 6 column one solvent purification system – Brookhaven Science Associates

Location: Upton, NY

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biological, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. From unraveling new details of the particle soup that filled the early universe to designing improvements for batteries, x-ray imaging, and even glass, their discoveries and achievements span a spectrum of size scales and fields of science.

Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE’s Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.

Pure Process Technology had the privilege of supplying Brookhaven Science Associates with a custom high volume, 6 column one Solvent Purification System with alumina media. PPT designed, built, delivered and set up the system that included an argon manifold, solvent cabinet, solvent keys, vacuum, solvent columns, and glassware as part of this unique package. The lab’s new solvent purification system will be utilized in their neutrino and nuclear chemistry group for solvent purification. Newly initiated R&D activities for the lab’s chemistry group include neutrino research, dark matter search, reactor monitoring, and non-proliferation applications and water-based liquid scintillators.
